Jalpaan in Rajasthan or Maarwadis is a common term for a full-fledged meal who btw are also well-known for their “manvaar” as in “Khaatirdari“. Better to say that you are packed when you are half-done while dining at a Rajasthani/ Marwadi household because they will feed you one or two rounds extra right after you say that you’re full. *tongue out* So as I was referring to the term and place “jalpaan”, the much popular chain in South India with one of its franchisee in Ahmedabad, has recently launched their winter menu and they were too kind to invite me at its tasting with a couple other bloggers from the town. Though the place has been open for quite some time now, I never really visited it. Although, I had thought of visiting it to try their much popular cooker pani puri and potli biryani, which I finally got to try at the blogger’s meet along with other winter delicacies especially curated by them for the season.

As you enter the restaurant, the bright yellow and turquoise blue coloured chairs are what catch your attention first. The table was set for us and a customised welcome note was kept in front of our respective seats. As I was the first one to arrive, I could manage to have some time walking around their restaurant, exploring the ambience and clicking some pictures. What amazed me was how they’ve divided the sections with different sort of decor and theme. One wall of Indian Cricketers and games represent the Indian sports, then the one beside it represents our galaxy, space and planets. Moving on to the last section, they have a Bollywood themed area with the popular 90s actor’s pictures on the wall. It is safe, to sum up, their ambience as a quirky and lit one.

Finally, as everyone got arrived one by one, we were served a welcome drink (Passion of love) with our name card on it. I have to say such personal touch always have my heart and makes me give the restaurant an extra brownie point for it.

Moving on with the starters, we were first served their signature dish which is Panipuri in miniature cookers. The cooker contains the pani (spicy and sweet variants kept in a tray alternatively for one to choose according to their preference). The pani already contains the chutneys well mixed in it. Both the variants were indeed good, however, the pani was too chilled for a winter menu *wink* They must either probably take it out of the fridge a while before serving so that it comes to the room temperature.

Next, we were served the delicious palak ki Chaat. It was a crisp bed of spinach loaded with curd and balanced well with chutneys and spices. It was such a refreshing start to the meal. One of the finest that I had in a long time. I loved the flavours, crispiness yet the softness of this one as it was crunchy yet easy to break.

Next up were the most favourite and special winter delicacy- Makki Di Roti and Sarson Da Saag. They prepare the dish by extracting the mustard greens (sarson) in-house which is the major ingredient for the recipe. It had a good balance of Indian condiments, garlic and ginger. Served with extra butter and jaggery on the side to enhance the flavour of the Makki ki roti, it was one of the finest winter dishes I had in Ahmedabad.

Then came a platter of Baingan ka Bharta with Tandoori Bajre Ka Rotla. I had never tried the tandoori preparation of bajre ka rotla and therefore, I was keen to try it out with some extra butter on the top to add more flavour to it. Though I have never eaten Brinjal in my life, I didn’t try the bharta.

Next came in a platter of spring onion rotis with Sizzling Veg Japlaan special Sabzi which was a two gravy combo of paneer prepared in a Hyderabadi style and mix vegetable in North Indian style. Both the Gravies were spectacularly lip smacking. The hare pyaaz ki roti was flaky and crisply cooked.

Finally moving on to the Khichdis which are an essential item in winters, we were served two varieties- Mexican khichdi and vegetable/masala khichdi. The latter was a regular masala khichdi with some extra tadka of burnt garlic in ghee on top and accompaniments as curd and papad were served with it. The former khichdi was a wonderful Mexican preparation containing corn and bell peppers. To give it an authentic Mexican feel, they provide some nachos and salsa sauce on the side as an accompaniment.

Finally arrived the three desserts. The chocolate gulab jamun was indeed big in size than a regular one. It was so fluffy and soft. Sweetness was absolutely balanced well. The other two desserts served to us were new for me- Litchi ki Teheri and Palak ka halwa. Honestly, the two sound quite peculiar especially the latter one, but the owner’s wife was so excited to make us try it out and damn, it was so yummy and just exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t resist taking a bite or two extra though I was so satisfied after this full course meal at Jalpaan.

They served us Paan shots as mouth fresheners, to sum up, our meal with. And, it was indeed perfect to end the meal with. Thanks to their staff and team for a wonderful hospitality and cuisine. The place has such warmth and vibe. They say that their food is entirely cooked in pure ghee and butter, no oil. I’d say I could definitely sense a homely touch in the food. I would recommend this place highly to all for a family party or get together. Not only do they have an a la carte menu but also fixed meals at fixed prices. For the food they’re serving, the place is worth every penny.
